What to Expect at Walter's Grove Baptist Church
Walter’s Grove Baptist Church was organized on August 20, 1913 by Y.E. Staley, C.L. Taylor, and J.T. Pierce along with Thirteen Members. The members voted to move an existing building from Jackson Creek to the present location rather than build a new structure. It was moved by rolling the building on logs pulled by a team of mules, the original logs still remain under the old church building to this day. The building was very dilapidated and repairs were made as money became available. Heating was provided by a pot-belly stove in the center of the room. The Land for the church was donated by Walter Grubb, and that is where the name Walter’s Grove came from.
The Church was not originally on a hill, when the paved road was built they cut down the road, widened it, and paved the road. A new twelve foot addition was built on the front of the Church and the first class room on the left with an open arch to accommodate over flow crowds in 1954. The heating system was converted to a gas floor furnace in 1963. A new pine communion table and pews were also made in 1963. Other classrooms were added and the Church was also bricked in 1965. Bathrooms and running water were added in 1970. Electric heat and air conditioning was added in 1971. Our first new piano was purchased in 1974 and in 1975 the fellowship hall was constructed.
Thank you for taking time to read this brief overview of Walter’s Grove Baptist Church. We are an Independent, Fundamental Baptist Church. Every service features old fashioned singing and King James Bible preaching. Walter’s Grove is a place where you and your family can grow in the Lord. It does not matter what stage of life you are in, there is somewhere for you to fit in. Most visitors say that our church is the friendliest church they have ever been to! I hope that you will take the time to visit us real soon.
In May of 1980 the first parsonage was purchased from C.L. Snider with a 20 year loan and was paid in full on May 29, 1991. A mortgage burning celebration was held at the fellowship hall a few weeks later. Adjoining land was purchased from Maggie Gourley in 1986, so additional facilities could be built. God blessed us with a new Church building on this land in 1993 under the leadership of Rev. Tim Gammons. We spent 16 wonderful years in this sanctuary and saw theLord add to our Church in a mighty way. In July of 1996 land was purchased from Bruce Wright which included a house. The old parsonage on Hill Road was traded in on the purchase of the land and the difference was paid by check. The House was totally renovated to be the new parsonage in the Spring of 1998. It now serves as the home of Shining Light School for Boys, a ministry of WGBC. In 2001, the Gym and Sunday school rooms were built. In November of 2007, we began construction on our new sanctuary that would double our seating capacity. God blessed the new construction and we moved in April 2009. God continues to bless us each week new faces and an atmosphere of worship that lifts up the name of Jesus. There have been twelve ministers called from the Church. Rev. Billy Yates, Rev. Warren Pierce, Rev. David Davis, Rev. Claude Byerly, Rev. Jonathan Ash, Rev. Kim Harris, Rev. Joseph Long, Rev. Joseph Mitchell, Rev. Jamie Watts, Rev. Mitchell Hulin, Rev. Daniel Eddinger, and Rev. Cody Eaton.
Ministries include a Bus Ministry, Bus Church, Soul Winning Program, Nursing Home Ministry, Troy Prison Ministry, Shining Light School for Boys, and Faith Promise Missions Program in which we support many Missionaries worldwide. God has been so good to us and is still bestowing blessings.
